What Happens During a Bcba-led In-home Assessment?
During an in-home assessment led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), the process is designed to be a friendly, family-centered experience that captures a true picture of a child’s natural environment. The assessment primarily consists of the following components:
- Parent Interview: The BCBA begins with a warm conversation to learn about your child’s strengths, challenges, and daily routines. You will discuss your family’s specific goals to ensure the plan is personalized to your needs.
- Direct Observation: This is a relaxed, child-led phase where the BCBA observes your child playing and interacting. There are no forced tasks; instead, the BCBA may engage the child in simple play-based activities, such as matching games or following easy instructions, to gauge current skill levels.
- Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): If challenging behaviors are present, the BCBA identifies the “function” or purpose behind them (such as seeking attention or sensory needs). This involves noting what happens before and after a behavior to understand what the child is trying to communicate.
- Plan Development: Using the gathered data, the BCBA develops a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). This document outlines proactive strategies for teaching alternative behaviors and communication skills.
